GIVE

One thing about Lane County residents is that we are hopeful and action oriented. When the 2008 Days of Caring call to volunteer was issued (see VOLUNTEER below) a record number of people responded. In these economically tumultuous times, we understand that a countywide safety net of human services is more necessary than ever. United Way's 2008 Campaign Co-Chairs, Jenny Ulum and Dean Hansen, agree that raising $4.9 million, even in a tough economic period, is realistic in a deeply caring community like Lane County. They are leading an energized team of volunteers and Loaned Executives into workplaces to invite everyone to join the LIVE UNITED movement by giving, advocating or volunteering. Find out more at www.unitedwaylane.org.

ADVOCATE

These are difficult days for many of our neighbors, families, and friends. Sometimes it's hard to know what to do. United Way can offer several ways for you to be an advocate for people in need. First, refer them to www.211Lane.org. This online guide allows you to search for local agencies that provide assistance and well as discover volunteer opportunities and other ways to give back to your community. The site is confidential and easy to use. Also, thanks to SELCO Community Credit Union's sponsorship, we are able to offer you a copy of Resources & Support in Lane County, Oregon. This brochure provides an overview of agencies providing help to those in need and is available in English and Spanish. Come by the United Way office to pick one up or call 741-6000 ext. 117 to have one mailed to you.

VOLUNTEER

Imagine what could happen if 1,000 hard working people donated a day of their time to improve community conditions. That's exactly what happened on Sept. 16 and 17, the 2008 Days of Caring. 5,076 hours of labor provided by work teams from 45 organizations produced brighter, fresher, and safer conditions at over 80 area nonprofit project sites. According to current research, the value of all that people power is $99,033.00. But that's just part of the value. Many of the work teams also provided equipment and supplies. Some examples of the projects completed during this year's Days of Caring include: a new playground at Pearl Buck Center; a drainage ditch at FOOD for Lane County's Grassroots Garden, and; a fresh coat of paint at the Alzheimer's Association. During these challenging times, Days of Caring provides a reminder of what a remarkable community we live in. Visit our website for Days of Caring photos.
