Community Solutions Report
Winter 2007-2008

THE LIVES WE CHANGE

Chronic conditions cause financial strain for families and community
Our recent Community Assessment revealed a high rate of chronic illness among low income families who had no health insurance.  To address that issue, United Way's 100% Access Healthcare Initiative sponsors Stanford University's Chronic Disease Self Management Program.*  The skills presented can significantly enhance day-to-day health while reducing the use of urgent care and emergency rooms as a healthcare last resort.  Classes are offered in English (687-6234) and Spanish (687-6299).  To date, 240 people have completed the course and many are reporting better health with fewer medications.

*United Way of Lane County is the only non-medical organization licensed by Stanford to offer the chronic disease program.

THE COMMUNITIES WE STRENGTHEN

2007 Community Assessment reveals local concerns and problems
This is the sixth Community Assessment survey to be conducted by United Way since 1992.  The information is used to guide United Way's community work and direct our funding priorities.   The top five problems reported were, in order, the inability to afford healthcare, medical insurance, gas and car maintenance, legal help, and home repairs.  The project takes nearly a year to complete and the results are used by grantors, social service agencies, and policy makers.  The 2007 Community Assessment is available at www.unitedwaylane.org

THE BOTTOM-LINE RESULTS

Child abuse rates dropping in Lane County unlike the rest of Oregon
United Way's focus on early childhood came about as a community response to escalating child abuse incidents in Lane County.   A range of projects ensued including the Parent HelpLine.  For 5 years now, thousands of families have found trained parent educators ready to help them and, if needed, link them directly to other professionals.  The bottom line?  Child abuse rates have dropped every year since it started.   According to the Oregon Department of Human Services,  "From 2001-2006, child abuse rates have decreased in Lane County while Oregon has seen an increase."  For a copy of the Success by 6® Status Report go to www.unitedwaylane.org.
