When William Jones, a former Marine from Chicago, was laid off, he was forced to empty his savings to keep his family afloat. Through a United Way funded rent assistance program, they were able to stay in their home until William could find work. Now, William has a full time job, a baby boy and a new dream – to become a Lane County Sheriff. “We just needed a little help,” says William, “and now we’re going to be OK.”

The caring power of community isn’t demonstrated any more clearly than in United Way of Lane County’s commitment to volunteerism. Volunteers are at the core of United Way and all it does. Volunteer opportunities range from leadership opportunities to hands on service in local communities.

Volunteer Leadership
At every level of our work, United Way volunteers lead the way. They give their time to make sure good decisions are made for the betterment of our community’s most vulnerable citizens. And, they drive our Community Impact work by identifying and addressing key local issues in order to stop problems before they happen.

United Way volunteer leaders serve the community in a collaborative fashion. Some examples include:

The Board of Directors that set the overall direction for our work.
The Community Solutions Committee that guides the strategic vision.
The Community Investment Committee that oversees the 150+ community members who make all our program funding decisions.
Review Panels that deliberate on the funding decisions and pass final approval.
Leadership Teams for all four goal areas that focus on specific areas of community issues.
The Campaign Cabinet leads our annual campaign.
And hundreds of single and group volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers play a critical role in driving United Way’s Community Impact work through roles like those listed above. Also, hundreds of volunteer opportunities throughout Lane County are available for those who would like to work in their communities in a more direct service role.
